Knee replacement is a kind of arthroplasty. Arthroplasty literally means “the surgical repair of a joint,” and it involves the surgical reconstruction and replacement of degenerated joints, using artificial body parts, or prosthetics. When the articular cartilage of the knee becomes damaged or worn, it becomes painful and the knee is hard to move. Instead of sliding over each other, the bones rub and crush together. With a prosthesis, the patient will feel less pain, and the knee will move properly.

Hip replacement, also called hip arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure to address hip pain. The surgery replaces parts of the hip joint with artificial implants. The hip joint consists of a ball (at the top of the femur, also known as the thigh bone) and a socket (in the pelvis, also known as the hip bone). Hip replacement surgery includes replacement of one or both parts. The goal of the procedure is to allow you to resume daily activities and exercise with less pain.

Joint revision is a type of surgery performed on a patient who already has an existing artificial joint that was implanted during a joint replacement procedure. There are several reasons why a patient might need joint revision surgery after a joint replacement. One of the most common reasons is that their existing implant, also referred to as a prosthesis, has reached the end of its expected lifespan, which is approximately 15 – 20 years for most artificial joints. Another reason why revision surgery might be needed is that the artificial implant from the original joint replacement procedure has become dislocated or there is an infection. Before moving forward with joint revision surgery, the surgeon will take X-rays or perform other tests in order to better understand what is happening. The doctor will also check for scar tissue in the area and consider what surgical techniques he or she will use. The joint revision surgeon might also consult with the joint replacement doctor about the original joint replacement procedure. If a patient has had a total joint replacement surgery, such as a knee replacement, they should always take note of any changes that might be happening. For example, although they may have had knee replacement surgery that was successful and brought pain relief when it was performed several years earlier, the knee has started to lock up. Or in another example, a patient may have had hip replacement surgery that left them nearly pain-free. However, now the artificial joint has begun to feel loose and uncomfortable.

The damaged tissue in your knee is removed and replaced with an artificial joint by your surgeon. The only difference is that it is done with the help of a robotic arm or a portable robotic device. Latest Technique to treat Fractures A broken bone must be carefully stabilized and supported until it is strong enough to handle the body's weight and movement. Until the last century, physicians relied on casts and splints to support and stabilize the bone from outside the body. The advent of sterile surgical procedures reduced the risk of infection, allowing doctors to internally set and stabilize fractured bones. During a surgical procedure to set a fracture, the bone fragments are first repositioned (reduced) into their normal alignment. They are held together with special implants, such as plates, screws, nails and wires. Internal fixation allows shorter hospital stays, enables patients to return to function earlier, and reduces the incidence of nonunion (improper healing) and malunion (healing in improper position) of broken bones. The implants used for internal fixation are made from stainless steel and titanium, which are durable and strong. If a joint is to be replaced, rather than fixed, these implants can also be made of cobalt and chrome. Implants are compatible with the body and rarely cause an allergic reaction. Primary trauma causes when an injury occurs, after treatment of primary trauma if it happens again and any damage at the site of injury, then it is known as revision trauma. Damage to the bones and soft tissue around the joints can occur at the site of the primary injury. In this case, your doctor may recommend that you do a second operation to remove some or all of the original prosthesis and replace it with a new one. This process is known as revision surgery. Revision trauma is different from primary injury because treating the area is a more complicated process. It requires extensive planning and use of implants and specialized tools to achieve good results. Malunion and nonunion fractures are fundamentally different from the original fracture. Diagnosing the cause of the fracture is essential to make the best treatment plan. Malunion Fracture: Malunion occurs when broken bones heal in an abnormal position. Depending on the severity, additional symptoms of malunion can be: Reduced functioning in the affected area Discomfort Pain Swelling Bruising Malunion cases do not always require treatment because some do not cause damage. However, if changes in bone position are significant and dangerous, surgical treatment is often needed to enable future mobility. Nonunion Fracture: This fracture occurs when a broken bone does not heal after a lengthy recovery period. In some cases, it can take up to nine months for bones to change completely. If your doctor or surgeon sees no signs of progressive healing during this long period, then it may be nonunion. In this case, the body does not produce the bone tissue needed to repair broken bones. Depending on the severity of the non-association, symptoms can include the following: Reduced functioning in the affected area Discomfort Pain Swelling Bruising Non-unions non-surgical treatments can consist of electrical stimulation or brace.

Back and neck pain can often be successfully treated with a combination of focused physical therapy, pain medications, and when necessary, spinal injections.
